The Challenge
Flashcards work, but only if a child actually wants to open the app again tomorrow. The brief wasn’t just "build a flashcard tool," it was building something a young learner would return to daily, while giving schools and teachers a genuine view into whether that repetition was translating into real progress, not just app time.
The Approach
We built the platform as three connected experiences around one shared data layer: a flashcard study loop where flipping a card reveals the answer alongside an image (reinforcing memory visually, which matters more for younger learners than text alone), a farm-growing game that turns study time into an earned reward, where correct answers and consistent studying earn coins a child spends on farm items to build out their own space, and a teacher and admin dashboard giving educators visibility into what’s actually being learned, not just played.
Tech & Craft Highlights
- ●Framer Motion powers the core card-flip interaction - And the farm-building animations: the single most-repeated motion in the app, designed to feel satisfying on every single flip, thousands of times over.
- ●Appwrite alongside a custom Express/MongoDB backend - Appwrite handling auth and user/file management, while the custom API layer runs the study logic, coin economy, and dashboard data, keeping the reward system and learning data fully custom rather than constrained by an off-the-shelf backend.
- ●REST architecture connecting three distinct dashboards - Student, teacher, and admin to one shared source of truth, so a teacher’s view of a student’s progress reflects exactly what that student is doing in the app in real time.
The Outcome
A learning platform built for Mauritius schools that turns daily flashcard study into a game kids actually want to come back to, with real progress visibility for the adults responsible for them.
